THE CAR IS TOTALED!!

Just in case you missed it here's the post that shows where his accident occurred. He cut someone off turning left into the McDonald's parking lot.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This is honestly the best case scenario seeing as he was having trouble keeping up with the payments as is. Unfortunately he didn't spring for GAP coverage at the dealership and Geico doesn't even offer it so her owes the finance company $5200. Maybe this time around he'll listen to his older brother who used to sale cars for a living. Actually it's looking like things are circling back to what I suggested to him in the first place. Go to Craigslist with $3k-$5k and find something that actually fits into your budget realistically.

Also he has finally decided to resume his lessons in learning how to operate a manual transmission. This will now lead him to infinite possibilities on CL.

I also have a brother who was an idiot and cracked up a car multiple times until he was dropped by his insurance. It was a lease, co-signed by my dad. Dad took over the payments to make sure his credit rating stayed intact. It's a much longer story than that, and dad's got enough money that the payments were only a drop in the bucket, but it's the principle of things.

Brother now lives in downtown DC and gets around with a combination of bike and subway. My dad occasionally makes him ride the subway out to Silver Spring MD where he gives him a ride up to visit my grandparents in their retirement community.

Definitely the principle. He made a mistake common to a lot of people. They see something they really want and try to find anyway to obtain it even though they can't really afford it. Making a budget and keeping to it is the best way to use your money and always have some on tap.

Fortunately for your brother he lives in a very easily accessible neighborhood with Metro and Uber all over the place. I'm sure he wish he was driving though. How old is your brother? Mine is 23.

Mine is 28. This happened a few years ago with the car. It was a base model Subaru Impreza. He was living in Baltimore at the time but for whatever reason convinced himself he needed awd and picked it over his other choice which was a Mazda 3.

He changed jobs, moved to DC, didn't have anywhere to park it, racked up like $900 worth of parking tickets which my grandparents paid off, and had a couple minor accidents he left unrepaired. Then he lost his job, moved back in with my parents in the suburbs, crashed the car, and told my dad he was going to take it to the body shop to be fixed.

A couple days later, my dad was walking the dog and he spotted the car, still crashed up, parked 6 houses down the street. That was my brother's attempt to hide the car until he could come up with the money to pay the insurance deductible. But my parents' street is a loop, and they have a dog. At least hide it in the next subdivision over or something.

He's gotten a bit more responsible with money since then, but not overly so.

.......... Yep he's a special one. I really don't know what to say about all of that except I hope he continues to get better with time. Don't give up teaching him how to be a responsible adult is all I can ask of you.

Why would geico not offer GAP on a new car? Seems incredibly odd considering how cheap progressive offered it for my FIesta, of all cars. You'd think the more valuable, easier to insure taurus would be a better gap candidate on the insurance side since it is less likely to end up upside down.......

Actually it was a used car. I believe certified used at that. From my understanding he was offered the coverage in the finance room but instead of asking questions he simply said no to it. Also I called Geico and asked if he had GAP on his car, they said they don't even offer it anymore. If this is the case they should be ashamed of themselves being one of the major insurance providers and not having that coverage to offer.

i thought gap insurance was a bad bet? Or is this one of those very early accidents where it makes sense? My car insurer told me to stay away from gap insurance.

Wrecked a car he couldn't afford while cutting someone off trying to get fast food. Sounds like an episode of Maury. Make sure your little bro has a plentiful supply of condoms.

No it's great to have especially for new cars and situationa like this. If you put down a sizeable down payment it's not needed as much because that payment has eaten a good portion of the depreciation. But if you pay for just taxes and tags you'll definitely need it. Besides it only costs a few hundred bucks at the dealership. Heard it can be cheaper with your insurance agency.
